Export of ripened curd cheese

The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy represented by itself a very good market, dominated by Vienna with extraordinary sales volumes of ripened curd cheese and also industrial agglomerations (Ostrava, Brno are the nearest cities). As early as in the mid-19th century there were (as documented) the wholesalers who supplied not only the city and its surroundings, but distributed the curd cheese „… further to the south …“. The oldest report describes import of the curd cheese (around 1870) - besides Brno and Vienna - even to Trieste. Before 1910 the cheese was exported to Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Herzegovina, Turkey and Egypt. Three years later, the Neoral Olomouc company, producing the ripened curd cheese as well, had its sales representatives in Egypt, Turkey and Argentina. According to a statement from the thirties, the Alois Wessels company confirmed in 1910 exports to the Caucasus and the North America. Interest in overseas markets seemed to be of long-term character; it is stated in 1913 as answer to the inquiry of those interested in the US „… on the local markets there is a high competition of German cheese of similar shapes …“. The Dubský company from Loštice tried to find its firm place there by air shipments (in thirties of the last century). Exports to Germany was prevented before 1918 due to competition of similar shaped cheese, mainly the Harz curd cheese. Export to Saxony and Prussia by the Chudoba and Novák company from Topolany is known around 1870.

Export and interest in the ripened curd cheese was accompanied by attempts to introduce production of the Olomouc cheese outside the Czech country.
